Today was the last day of Golden Week holidays. Going to work after a week absence needs a little drive. So here is something to shake you up! A beef bowl(牛丼)!
It is a rice bowl covered with thinly sliced beef and onions simmered in a sweet soy sauce flavored dashi. Pickled ginger(紅しょうが) for the relish.
You can easily have a beef bowl at a fast food chain such as Yoshinoya(吉野家) and Sukiya(すき屋) with 500yen coin. If you are living outside of Japan or would like to make it for yourself, here is the recipe. It's easy and quick.
Cooking time: 10mins
85g thinly sliced beef(in Japan, labels with 牛丼用 or 小間切れ are suitable)
1/4 onion(玉葱), slice
a bowl of cooked rice
2 tablespoon dashi
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon mirin
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1/2 tablespoon sake
Put all the seasonings in a small frying pan and boil. Put sliced onion and simmer until it gets soft. Add sliced beef and simmer until cooked. Dish up on a bowl of cooked rice.
